Broker Essentials in Commercial Insurance – Certificate

Course Description

An on-demand eLearning course designed to transition an experienced personal lines brokers into a contemporary commercial lines broker.

Commercial Lines in Ontario is not a science. It is professional expertise rooted in experiential knowledge. This course pairs foundational learning with authentic, modern context. Developed alongside a group of broker experts, transitioning their accurate and practical knowledge to the next generation of commercial insurance broker professionals.

In addition to understanding the fundamentals, learners will also be asked to read and interact with real life, contemporary examples. The course includes videos from some of Ontario’s top commercial lines brokers who offer advice to help ground the theory with practical execution.

As an on-demand eLearning program, students can start and stop wherever they need, review sections repeatedly if they wish, and deepen their relationship with the strong professionals in their brokerages to ask for advice.

Recommended for: Personal Lines RIBO Licensed Brokers with 2 or more years experience. Part of the IBAO Foundations series.

Recognizing that most Commercial Lines brokers learn this trade by mentorship within their brokerage, the learner is guided into completing a list of staff at their brokerage who have specific knowledge of the areas covered in this course.

Introduction to Commercial Auto

Accurately recall key terms and forms, define the categories of commercial automobiles, evaluate the conditions between Owned and Non-Owned autos from a coverage perspective, combine knowledge learned into example scenarios, use language and terminology correctly to work with an underwriter.

Introduction to Garage Policies

Evaluate risks to a business property based on Auto, identify the operations of a garage client, strategize procedures to work-with and maintain a garage client, recognize client’s willingness risks to business from responses to questions.

Introduction to Commercial Property

Accurately identify the key characteristics of building elements, or COPE, apply the fundamentals of COPE onto a checklist, learn to view risks from an underwriter’s perspective & communicate with them effectively.

Introduction to Business Interruption

Learn to articulate what the broker’s role is and how to explain this type of coverage it to the client, apply the fundamentals of Business Interruption onto a checklist, recognize the key features of Errors & Omissions as to how they effect your client.

Commercial Liability

Evaluate the implications of liability in a commercial setting, assess strategies that best assist a client in their environment, define what liability is comprised of based on the type of client, describe how Errors & Omissions effects the policies that are written, use language and terminology correctly to work best with an underwriter.

Putting it all Together

Learners are presented with 2 case studies (i.e. examples business clients) and must apply all areas of this course to complete a client questionnaire. The questionnaire forces the learner describe all the exposures, risks/hazards and financial information before going to market for quoting.
